Rebelote. Tesla still has to recall tens of thousands of vehicles. In total these are 48,184 Model 3 Performance who will have to go back to the garage… of their owners.
Because at Tesla, most problems can be solved with a simple update. This is the case here since the Model 3 Performance encounter a software problem.
European buyers can be reassured, the models affected by this bug are American, more particularly those who bought a Model 3 Performance between 2018 and 2022.
The problem observed is at the level of real-time speed display. Model 3 Performance models have the exclusive Track mode.
The latter was designed to have fun on circuits. According to Tesla, it improves “vehicle performance and handling while driving on closed circuits”. However, nothing prevents a driver from activating it on the road.
The 48,184 models affected by the bug do not specify whether the displayed speed is in km/h or in mph. Inevitably, this can present increased risks of accidents. The website of the NHTSA (federal agency responsible for road safety in the United States) indicates:
The driver cannot know how fast the vehicle is traveling without the display of the mph or km/h unit, which increases the risk of an accident.
If Tesla is to correct the problem, the vehicles have not received a driving ban. Since April 19, the vehicles concerned have therefore received an update to the Track mode. No accidents were reported.
This is not the first time that Tesla has had to revise its copy following massive problems. A few days ago, the European Commission asked Tesla to recall several thousand Model S sold between 2014 and 2021. In question: trunk opening problems when the vehicle was traveling at high speed.
Above all, last February, Tesla had to recall nearly a million vehicles, all models combined, for seat belt problems. This time, no update, but a return to the garage in due form.
Despite these setbacks, the company continues to seduce. In the first quarter of 2022, Tesla announced record results. And according to Elon Musk, orders keep pouring in as component shortages hold back production. Tesla therefore has a full delivery book until the end of 2023.
