The monkeypox epidemic is currently affecting “overwhelmingly men who have sex with men”, explains Nathan Pfeifer Smadja, from the Parisian Bichat hospital. The researchers can confirm this after observing that many lesions related to the disease appeared “at the level of the penis, anus and pharynx”, he specifies.
However, the monkeypox virus is not considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI) because these are characterized by contamination through sexual secretions. However, at present, research has not proven that the monkeypox virus was present in these secretions.
