A person living in New York State has tested positive for polio, according to health authorities.
It had been more than ten years since polio had hit the United States. However, Thursday July 21, a person tested positive. Since then, the health authorities have asked doctors to monitor possible new cases and above all, to encourage residents to get vaccinated if this was not already the case.
This viral disease mainly affects children under the age of 5. It has been virtually eradicated worldwide: cases have decreased by 99% since 1988.
The World Health Organization warned last month that a vaccine-derived type of poliovirus had been spotted in sewage samples in London.
