This solar-powered car could well overshadow Tesla

Lightyear 0: the solar car from the Dutch manufacturer promises breathtaking autonomy thanks to the sun.

The startup Lightyear has just lifted the veil on its first solar electric vehicle. Called Lightyear 0, it is the product of six years of research and development. With a range of 11,000 km announced thanks to solar energy, it could well compete with Tesla.

Drive for months without having to charge your car

With 5m2 solar panels with patented double curves, this vehicle can be recharged while driving and even when left in the sun. A person with a daily commute of at least 35 km could possibly drive for months without having to plug in their vehicle. This solar car will charge itself as it travels.

Lightyear claims that in countries with the same climate as the Netherlands, their vehicle would have two months of autonomy. In Spain or Portugal, this autonomy could go up to seven months. Under optimal temperature and sunshine conditions, its solar panels can indeed provide 1.05 kW of energy per day. Its battery can therefore be fully recharged in just 60 hours of sunlight.

The main features of the Lightyear 0 solar car

The Lightyear 0 is powered by a 60 kWh 350 kg battery. Four electric motors providing 174 horsepower support this battery. The firm announces a 625 km WLTP range which is much better than that of 510 km from the Tesla Model 3 equipped with the same battery.

This performance comes from its four electric motors and its tapered design over a length of 5 m. This vehicle has only 0.19 drag coefficient. Especially since the Lightyear 0 weighs only 1575 kg.

As for its interior, it unsurprisingly displays a minimalist and refined style. All materials used are vegan. The upholstery is microfiber, the leather is plant-based and the fabrics are made from recycled bottles. Its fittings are made of palm wood rattan.

This solar car from Lightyear sports a 10.1-inch center touchscreen. The latter runs on Android Automotive which is Google’s native operating system. All other current high-tech flagship features are also supported.

Availability and prices

The Lightyear 0 solar car is available on the manufacturer’s website for a price of €250,000 duty free. With a start of production scheduled for October, the first deliveries should be made at the end of the year.
