This medical technique is only deployed in about fifteen public and private establishments in France, within the exclusive framework of a national study, the hospital center of Chartres (Eure-et-Loir) has been part of it since May 2022. It aims to treat certain prostate cancers.

By electroporation and for which forms of cancer?

It’s Doctor Luca Lunelli, who arrived in Chartres Hospitals in 2019, who is developing this integrated care pathway, specializing in urological oncology, with a focus on prostate, kidney and bladder cancer.

This innovative technique is based on electroporation, “which consists of destroying cancerous cells, without damaging the nerves, blood vessels and muscles of urinary continence”, explains the urological surgeon at the Chartres hospital center. Those are the localized forms of prostate cancer that can be treated with this new device.

This microbiological technique consists in applying, under general anesthesia, an electric field on the targeted cell membranes.

A quick return home thanks to the treatment

And already promising results would appear, the risks of collateral effects are very low, and this makes it possible not to have recourse “to a radical treatment such as a total prostatectomy or radiotherapy”. With electroporation, the patient’s return home is facilitated and takes place within 24 to 48 hours.
