Tennis – Masters 1000 Madrid: Novak Djokovic easily dismisses Gaël Monfils (6-3, 6-2) and goes to the 3rd round

Decidedly, Gaël Monfils does not succeed against Novak Djokovic. For their 18th confrontation, the French lost for the 18th time. This Tuesday evening, the Frenchman, 21st player in the world, was beaten by the Serbian, seeded n°1, during the second round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid. A defeat in two sets (6-3, 6-2) and 1h28 of play. Gradually gaining momentum, the world number one, now guaranteed to remain so next Monday, will be able to try to continue, for a round of 16 which will pit him against Andy Murray or Denis Shapovalov.

Is this the real kick-off of the season on clay?

Everything changed after the hiatus. In the first set, at 2-2 40-40, the two players had to return to the locker room, a good half hour, due to the rain. Time to put the roof on the Manolo Santana Stadium and dry the clay court. Before that, in this famous first round, Gaël Monfils had been the first to stand out, even getting two break points at 1-1, but without achieving his goals.

Djokovic converted all his break points

When the two players resumed, the Frenchman put his opponent in danger again, at 2-2, but Novak Djokovic, exempted from the first round as the No. 1 seed, got away with it again. It was then necessary to wait for the very last game of this meeting, in the second set, to see the 21st player in the world again put Djokovic in danger on his serve. But on his two new opportunities, Monfils, who committed too many unforced errors (31 against 15), saw the best player in the world, yet behind the Frenchman in terms of winning shots (11 against 18) every time.

Although quite nervous at the start of the game, the Serb ended up gaining momentum. If he was able to save these five break points, Djokovic converted the three he himself obtained. His first came in the first set, on the heels of the Frenchman’s third break point. An advantage that was enough to then win the first set (6-3). In the second set, his two breaks at 1-1 then 4-2 were enough for him to then put an end to this meeting (6-2).

For his ninth match of the season, Novak Djokovic won for the sixth time. This is only his third success of the year in two runs. We will have to count on the Serb in this Masters 1000.
