Pixel Watch, Google’s first connected watch will be able to unlock your smartphone

The connected watch expected this fall will not use the same application as the other models under Wear OS. It will allow a priori to unlock smartphones thanks to an enriched Smart Unlock function.

Things are becoming clearer regarding the first Pixel Watch. The website 9to5Google broke down the latest APK version of the Google Play Services app. Its journalists discovered that the first connected watch from the Pixel brand would probably be equipped with its own application, called… Google Pixel Watch. Information that was not specified during the Google I/O developer conference last May.

Connected watches under Wear OS generally use an application, common to all smartwatches. Wear OS 3 comes from the alliance between Google and Samsung, and is based on a merger between Wear OS and Tizen. It should be launched in the second half of 2022. However, the Pixel Watch, expected for the fall, will be entitled to a dedicated application without really knowing what justifies this different treatment. Unless…

Unlocking the smartphone from his wrist

By decompiling the application published on the Play Store, 9to5Google discovered a line of code that very clearly mentions a very interesting function: “To set up your watch for Smart Unlock, connect it to your phone with the Google Pixel Watch app. Your watch and phone must be connected to use Smart Unlock » (see picture below).

Introduced with Android Lollipop in 2014, the feature Smart Unlock allows you to unlock your smartphone, tablet or Chromebook intelligently, using some of the on-board sensors, depending on whether the product is in an environment deemed sufficiently safe, in a specific secure location (the bottom of your pocket) or depending on your proximity . In this case, as Apple’s Watch already allows, it seems that the Pixel Wactch will unlock an Android smartphone when it is worn and unlocked too.

The fact that the Google Pixel Watch has a dedicated app isn’t entirely absurd, with the Pixel Buds having their own. The question is rather to know if this software will really bring something different compared to the application which will be reserved for other devices running Wear OS 3 and, even, if its existence is justified.
