A “Completely Different” Sketch Series: Monty Python’s Flying Circus (Netflix)

An anthology of sketches, parodies of TV shows and improbable reports that expose the failings of British society.

The opinion of CNET France

Is it still necessary to introduce the troupe of Monty Python? The six British geniuses achieved worldwide success through their films, including Brian’s Life and holy grailand have inspired many actors and troupes, including Les Nuls en France.

However, their first successful series, the Monty Python’s Flying Circus, produced between 1969 and 1974, was invisible in France until the early 1990s on television. It’s essential to fully appreciate the extent of the sextet’s surreal madness, and more so, how very few of the sketches have actually aged.

The four seasons of flying circus are intended as a testing ground pushing the boundaries of humor on television; and, indeed, the BBC’s British censors had a run-in with the troupe. Transitions between skits are improbable; the intro, with a breathless bearded man running for no reason towards the camera to start the credits, is even more so. The gentle anarchy of the sketches, interspersed with handmade animations by Terry Gilliam (one of the many members of the troupe who will then pass behind the camera), constitutes the identity of the program.

The Monty Pythons seem to have fun with everything: the length of the sketches, the valves inserted there to make them laugh first, voluntary technical problems (ill-placed slides), the army, Cardinal Richelieu… .. As with the best sketch series, listing the best starting points would be a challenge. Suffice it to say that many have attempted to copy the flying circusno one succeeded.

The four seasons available on Netflix are not remastered in HD like the versions published in France at the end of last year, but are largely appreciable as they are. They are only available in their original version with French subtitles.

An adorable comedy: Great News (Netflix)

A TV producer’s ambitions take an embarrassing turn when her mother joins the team as the channel’s new little intern.

The opinion of CNET France

The fans of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Saturday Night Live will certainly recognize the name of Tina Fey, one of the most important voices of American comedy, who finds herself in the production of this project, alongside her sidekick Robert Carlock. Except that here, the tone and the characters are much less delirious than for Kimmy Schmidt, and the creator Tracey Wigfield here focuses on the backstage of a local news channel, MNN, and a relationship mother- daughter.

The Great News of the title is that the increasingly lonely mother, Carol (Andrea Martin), in her sixties, decides to become an intern on MNN’s flagship show, The Breakdown… where her daughter Katie (Briga Wheelan). Which is less than ideal, as Katie struggles to rise through the ranks to get her segments produced on the show in a very competitive work environment…

It’s hard not to think of Tina Fey’s flagship creation, 30Rock (broadcast on Canal + and available on DVD). Everything is done so that we find our marks there: egocentric presenters in the West, namely the star of the program Chuck Pierce (John Michael Higgins), little catchy music by Jeff Richmond (at work on 30Rock), and lots of hilarious jokes about the world of television.

The difference is that over the course of the series, Katie and Carol learn to like each other better, even to help each other, and Carol tries, with varying degrees of success, to remedy some of the neuroses of these colleagues. The series also offers a very successful acting performance for Nicole Richie, as an incompetent co-host, light years away from her reality shows with Paris Hilton.

Great News is a somewhat uneven but very endearing series, which only had 2 seasons. Bonus for those who go beyond the first season: Tina Fey herself arrives as the new boss of MNN in season 2.

An animated series that does not lack dog: The Snoopy Show (Apple TV +)

The most acrobatic, smartest and dreamiest of all dogs is back for new adventures, surrounded by his best friend Woodstock and his faithful companions.

The opinion of CNET France

Snoopy has long been present on screens around the world, through animated films around Christmas or Halloween produced in the 1960s, but traditionally rebroadcast every year across the Atlantic. A few years ago, France 3 even broadcast a series featuring comic book gags Peanuts drawn and thought for decades by Charles Schulz… And that’s not counting the release of the 3D animated film in 2015.

To launch its video on demand service in 2019, Apple immediately bet on Snoopy, his master Charlie Brown and his friends, but not just anyhow. After a series of educational short films in partnership with NASA, Snoopy In Space, The Snoopy Show was launched at the beginning of 2021, with an approach that could be described as conservative.

While most animated series are becoming more and more sophisticated and ambitious, the Canadians at WildBrain Studios in charge of canning the 13 episodes of season 1 had very strict instructions: the series should be in 2D or would not. We still don’t get adults to talk. Snoopy doesn’t get popular on TikTok; besides, we don’t know what it is with the Peanuts. It is this deliberately restrictive approach that makes this new adaptation of the adventures of Peanuts… a spectacular creative achievement.

Rhythmed by jazzy chords that directly echo the music of Vince Guaraldi (composer of the Snoopy specials in the 1960s), The Snoopy Show highlights his tandem with Woodstock (the bird), his dreamy whims as an aircraft soldier en route to Paris, or his plans to make a perfect snowman. If Charlie Brown is still unlucky, he is also very benevolent and sometimes saves the day for Snoopy.

Visually, colors and 2D animation have never been so dazzling, thus giving relief to the adage too little used in animation and children’s programs: “the less you do, the better”. Divided into two or three segments, each episode demonstrates the Snoopy Show crew’s abiding reverence for preserving the souls of comic strips by Schulz. The simplicity of the stories, the dosage of gags, the fluid timing of the animation: The Snoopy Show does not look like much, but his artistic integrity hits the mark. And risks making more than one fall back into childhood. Season 2 is broadcast in two parts: the second part (7 episodes) is scheduled for this summer.
