The Spanish Ministry of Health announced on Saturday a second death linked to monkeypox. He is the second European to succumb to the disease.
With 4,298 reported cases, Spain is the country most affected by monkeypox. After a first death announced on Friday, Spain reported another death linked to monkeypox on Saturday.
The victim is a 31-year-old man who died in Cordoba (Andalusia) of meningoencephalitis. His case is being investigated because of its association with monkeypox infection.
According to Telecinco, the man was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Reina Sofía University Hospital in Córdoba. The autopsy will determine if the cause of death is meningoencephalitis or another pathology.
Spanish authorities said 120 people were hospitalized in the country.
On July 23, the WHO declared monkeypox an international health emergency after confirmed cases increased again and transmission spread to more than 75 countries.
In Spain, more than 4,000 patients with this disease are men and only 64 women, and the age varies between 10 months and 88 years, with an average age of 37 years.
According to these data, 3,458 were men who have sex with men (of the 4,148 patients for whom this type of information is available). Information is also available on the most likely mechanism of transmission in 2,253 cases, 82.1% being through close contact through sexual intercourse and 10.5% through close non-sexual contact.
It should be noted that Catalonia recorded, this Saturday, 1,406 cases of monkeypox.
On Friday, a resident of the Valencian Community died of monkeypox.
