A new virus has been discovered in China, according to health authorities and scientists in Taiwan. Titled Langya-Henipavirus (LayV), the new pathogen is transmitted from animals to humans, and could cause organ failure, reports an article from the Blick on Tuesday. To date, 35 people have been infected.

Hepatic insufficiency

“LayV” belongs to the family of paramyxoviruses, which are transmitted mainly by droplets, like Covid-19. It would have appeared in the Chinese provinces of Shangdong and Henan. According to the Taiwan Center for Disease Control and a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reported by the Taipei Times, 26 of 35 patients had novel virus infection only, with no other disease. They developed symptoms such as fever, fatigue, cough, loss of appetite, muscle aches, nausea or even headaches. More than half of them also had a decrease in white blood cells, more than a third liver failure, and 8% kidney failure.

Dogs and goats

Dogs and goats seem to be the main carriers of the virus. No cases of human-to-human transmission have been proven, and no deaths have been reported so far. Taiwanese laboratories have announced plans to develop a standardized nucleic acid test method to identify and track the evolution of Langya-Henipavirus in humans.
