On streaming services, there are two types of subscribers, those who watch content (films, series or documentaries) at normal speed and those who want to optimize their free time by increasing the speed. All iOS and iPadOS apps that used Apple’s video player with iOS 15 could not offer higher speed to their users. With iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, it’s over!
Increasing the speed of your reading becomes possible
Many developers who are testing the new iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura and tvOS 16 updates right now have noticed a change in Apple’s video player. Indeed, a menu now offers access to the functionality “Playback Speed”a novelty that will allow you to to slow down reading or to increase speed.
Like what can be seen on other video players, the speed offered ranges from 0.5x up to 2.0x, 1x being the normal default speed as soon as the user starts playing.
Logically, all applications that choose to use Apple’s video player will have this new feature, however developers may decide to do not activate it when integrating Apple’s video player into their app.
In the past, this feature has created a certain debate among content creators, many do not appreciate that we can speed up reading, this would spoil experience according to some industry professionals. Which can be somewhat understandable, especially when you’ve been working on a series or a film for several years… We absolutely want viewers to be able to feel all the emotion of the most important scenes.
Whether on iOS 16, iPadOS 16, tvOS 16 or macOS Ventura, as soon as you are on an application that offers Apple’s video player, you can increase the speed of your reading. However, the icon will not be the same:
- On iPhone and iPadthe button will be represented by a three dots surrounded by a circle
- On Macit will be necessary to press the “»” button and select playback speed
- On AppleTVthe button will be represented as a timer icon located to the left of the subtitles.
Obviously this feature is just a detail and not revolutionary, but for some users it is a big improvement which will make it possible to follow the episode of a series more quickly. Which can be very useful when you have limited time like during a lunch break at work.
