Since I have an electric car, I no longer stress about mechanical repairs. I owned a youngtimer, a petrol BMW e36 that literally broke down every weekend. There’s some fun to tinkering with under its hood, but I just got tired of it.
To taste the electric and above all to rejuvenate my everyday life, I set my sights on a Model 3 from Tesla. Best decision of my life, 2 years now that I have had it, 2 years of being quiet about maintaining the vehicle.
A small side, a electric car need maintenance like any vehicle, but they will be much less. In this article you will find everything you need to know take good care of your electric car.
Almost no maintenance thanks to simplified mechanics
By design, an electric car is less likely to break down. Unlike an internal combustion engine, the electric engine does not require an oil change, replacement of toothed belts, spark plugs, etc. In short, it needs no maintenance on consumables specific to heat engines.
For your safety, brake pads, tires, wipers and windshield washers are the only items that need to be replaced regularly.
In fact, replacing the windshield washer is the only periodic maintenance you would do on your own.
Less wear on the brakes
As previously mentioned, brake pads and tires are among the consumables that must be replaced on an ongoing basis. However, less than those in a thermomobile. You have to understand that an electric car uses two braking systems, the first is the traditional one with the brake pedal and discs. The other is an alternator motor brake which occasionally charges the battery.
Everything related to the mechanical system and the tires are subjected to less stress, which gives them a longer life. This way you save more.
What about battery life?
Since this is an electric vehicle, the most important element, apart from the engine, is the battery. If an electric car is particularly durable, it is thanks to the battery life. These are generally guaranteed for 8 years or 150,000 km from the manufacturers. When they have lost too much autonomy from their original state, they are replaced.
Visit and technical control
Reviews are generally made every 30,000 km with an electric car, which is much better than thermo cars that have to go there every 15 to 20,000 km.
As previously mentioned, the interviews are much shorter and simpler thanks to the mechanics of the vehicle.
However, a technical inspection every two years is still recommended to ensure proper maintenance of your electric car.
Where should you get your electric car serviced?
Unfortunately, any garage will not do. The ideal is to do it at your dealer, their mechanics and their installations will be better suited to the maintenance of your vehicle.
In fact, in the case of repairing the Tesla, which has an aluminum body, a specialized garage is actually necessary. Not to mention the specificity of the electric motor, which requires the right tools and the right people.
The costs of maintaining an electric car
With all the technologies embedded in an electric car, one would be tempted to say that maintenance costs would be much higher than for a thermomobile. And yet, as you will have been told throughout this article, an electric car does not have the same limitations as a thermomobile.
The parts last longer because they are less stressed and there are also fewer of them.
We see that an electric car costs 35% less than a thermal car for annual maintenance. It is estimated that maintenance costs are less than €2 per 100 km compared to €6-7.5 for a petrol or diesel car.
In my Model 3’s case, Tesla offers a €2800 contract that guarantees maintenance for 4 years or 80,000 km.
If you’re not green at heart, don’t mind the price of gas, and often get your hands dirty, electric might not be for you. On the other hand, if there are no small savings for you and the health of your wallet is important to you, the adoption of an electric vehicle will do you the greatest good.
