Google wants to compete with Apple with its Pixel Watch connected watch

The Tech giant presented new products on Wednesday, including its first connected watch called Pixel Watch.

At its annual conference dedicated to developers, Google presented new products on Wednesday, including its first connected watch called Google Pixel Watch. The multinational thus intends to compete with the Apple Watch from the Apple brand.

Unlike the Apple Watch, the Google Pixel Watch has a circular screen, imitating most classic wristwatches. The device, which will be marketed in the fall for an as yet unknown price, has been mainly developed by Fitbitwhich Google acquired in January 2021.

Not compatible with iPhones

30%

Nearly a third of the connected watch market is held by Apple, which Google intends to compete with with its Pixel Watch.

Google Watch will work with its software WearOS and will support tasks such as paying by card, finding directions in Google Maps and receiving notifications. Unlike other smartwatches running Wear OS, Google’s Pixel Watch won’t be compatible with Apple iPhones.

The connected watch market is quite saturated, Apple holding about 30% of sales. Samsung holds 10%, while Fitbit, Garmin and smaller China-based players like Huawei share the rest of the market.

In addition to its smartwatch, Google also on Wednesday introduced high-end headsets, new smartphones and its first tablet since pulling out of that market three years ago.
