Google Drive: artificial intelligence will save you time and storage

News hardware Google Drive: artificial intelligence will save you time and storage

These were not the novelties that were missing during the Google conference this Wednesday, May 11. Many of them were intimately linked to artificial intelligence. This has been Google’s spearhead for a long time, and great things are coming to Google Drive.

No more duplicates on Google Drive

Google Drive is the most widely used online storage service in the world. It works from any device, either through an app or directly from a browser. Linked to the Google account that we all have, it allows many users and companies to work efficiently.

It is possible to create many folders and files, the latter can be duplicated in several places to organize more easily. However, this implies doubling the storage of the file to reproduce it in another location.

Storage is not infinite and it becomes chargeable beyond 15 GB:

  • 100 GB for €1.99/month
  • 200 GB for €2.99/month
  • 2 TB for €9.99/month

To save storage, Google will add an automatic feature in the coming weeks that turns all duplicates into shortcuts, simply reverting back to the original version. Shortcuts already exist, but must be created manually, and are limited to 500.

Important to know: this addition will not be mandatory and may be refused. It will not change the different accesses to files and folders fixed beforehand.

Smart summaries in Google Docs and Google Chat

It’s not the first place you’d imagine seeing artificial intelligence in action, but Google makes us a very interesting proposal: summaries of Google Docs documents.

It can be tedious to stuff a long report of several dozen pages for work, and sometimes we would like to have a list of important information to remember. And it seems complicated for a machine to understand the ins and outs of a long text in order to offer a summary that holds up.

Google promises it to us soon. We do not have an exact date, but the firm announces that Google Chat will also benefit from it a little later in the coming months. No more scrambling over hundreds of messages in a conversation to catch up.

This Google I/O conference clearly showed Google’s current level in terms of machine learning, and this feature is a dream when you think of the potential time saved. We will also note the announcements concerning security against dangerous links, tightened in Google Doc, Slides, and Sheets.
