The boss of Tesla believes that an electric car with 1000 km of autonomy would be quite feasible, but not necessarily useful.
For several years now, the main defect of electric cars has been their autonomy. In France, but also internationally, the charging network is still too underdeveloped to drive without having to adapt your route. Between the lack of dedicated stations and their low mileage compared to thermal vehicles, one might think that the subject is of particular concern to Tesla, a great pioneer in the EV market.

Yet Elon Musk surprised his audience on Twitter. A few days ago, as the eccentric billionaire called for “more oil and gas”he also explained why it was technically possible to produce electric cars with a range of 1000 km: “We could have produced 600 mile (1000 km) Model S models a year ago, but that wouldn’t have improved the product in my opinion, because 99.9% of the time it would be like carrying a useless battery ground”.
Elon Musk prefers to bet on speed and efficiency
If the boss of Tesla does not see not the interest of an electric vehicle with 1000 km of autonomy, it is simply because it would entail substantial sacrifices in terms of comfort on the road: by betting on better autonomy, the brand should have chosen to increase the volume and weight of its battery. A situation that would inevitably “hindered acceleration, handling and efficiency” of the car. Especially, recalls Musk, that with 400 miles (645 km) of autonomy, the brand’s vehicles would already cover “more than most drivers need”.
However, the brand plans to make an exception with its Roadster, expected for 2023, the imposing vehicle will have a range of 620 miles, or more than 1000 km. As a direct consequence of this choice, the racing car will be equipped with an imposing 200 kWh battery pack to go the distance.
