“The adverse effects, which can go as far as serious infections or necrosis of the skin, are mainly linked to non-compliant practices, such as non-compliance with hygiene conditions or a poorly performed injection”, underlines the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM).

The National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) is concerned about a growing number of problems following injections of hyaluronic acid. This Monday, July 11, the agency recalls that these procedures are an act of aesthetic medicine which can degenerate into serious side effects and must absolutely be carried out by doctors.

“These practices carried out by non-physicians are dangerous and prohibited, warns the ANSM in a press release.

Hyaluronic acid is a gel that is used in particular by aesthetic doctors to reduce wrinkles. But these injections are also practiced illegally by unauthorized persons, a phenomenon that has recently increased. In particular, AFP had collected at the beginning of the year a series of testimonials from patients who had undergone disastrous consequences poorly performed acts, such as local abscesses or generalized infections.

About 40 reports of side effects

“These adverse effects, which can go as far as serious infections or necroses of the skin, are mainly linked to non-compliant practices, such as non-compliance with hygiene conditions or a poorly performed injection”, underlines the ANSM. Complications can also be caused by the questionable quality of the acid used, the agency recalling that it is essential to be able to ensure the traceability of the product.

In terms of figures, the ANSM has reported, since the beginning of the year, about forty reports of side effects linked to the injection of hyaluronic acid by unauthorized persons. “Doctors know how to deal with immediate adverse effects such as an allergy to the product injected – anaphylactic shock -, necrosis or ischemia – clogged blood vessel -, by a appropriate medical treatment”, reminds the ANSM.
