Apple News+ readership is reportedly down for major magazine publishers

Apple News+ readership is reportedly down for many of the major magazine publications. According to data obtained by Press newspaper. Data suggests that the top 25 magazines on Apple News+ reached a combined circulation of just over 1.3 million in the first half of 2022, up from the first half of 2021 but down from the second half of 2021.

Apple News+ readership is reportedly down

Here’s the circulation breakdown for these Apple News+ magazine publishers, according to data from the Audited Media Alliance.

  • First half of 2021: 1,255,802
  • Second half of 2021: 1,622,823
  • First half of 2022: 1,333,088

Here’s a breakdown of circulation data for the top 10 magazine publishers on Apple News+, according to Newspaper. These figures are calculated by the Alliance of Audited Media using “average unique opens per issue of a magazine”.

“The top 25 magazines for each time period differ slightly, indicating that many individual titles in the current rankings have significantly increased circulation despite the broader trend,” the report explains.

As you can see, this indicates that circulation for publishers has decreased sequentially, but has increased year-over-year compared to the same period in 2021. This data is difficult to compare because, in general, media traffic and readership are higher towards the end of the year than at the end of the year beginning.

Therefore, there is a seasonal aspect to the industry that may ultimately indicate that Apple News+ readership is growing. The key, however, will be traffic data for the second half of this year, which are of course not available yet.

It’s also important to note that this data only refers to magazines published via Apple News+, not Apple News’ total readership. However, the availability of the magazines is one of the main incentives that Apple puts forward for potential Apple News+ subscribers.

The accuracy of this data is unclear. Apple does not publicly provide any metrics for Apple News+ readership. However, publishers have access to information on readership, traffic, sources, etc. It’s also possible (if not likely) that these publishers are experiencing a broader decline in readership that isn’t exclusive to Apple News+.

Apple News+ is available on its own for $9.99 per month. It’s also included in the $32.95-a-month Apple One Premier plan, along with Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+ with 2TB of storage, and Apple Fitness+.
