Seen by some as the future of transportation, the Semi will certainly mark a turning point in mobility and in the use of electric motors. Tomasz Orynski, a Polish driver, took a more pragmatic view of the vehicle. His assessment of it is not the most sympathetic.

“I don’t want to talk about its cargo capacity or anything. I just want to look at the cabin from a practical perspective as someone whose job is to drive a truck. Because it’s the opposite of ‘built around the driver.'”
Wasted space and poor visibility
Take effect, “built around the driver” was Tesla’s slogan at the presentation of the Semi. Comparing the Semi’s cabin to the DAF XG+, the largest truck on the market, the driver laments “lost place” in the Tesla, and then list the faults.

This is obviously a big problem as sleeping in the truck is an integral part of being a truck driver. He remembers that drivers “Sometimes you need a 20 minute nap when you’re driving at night”. A 20 minute nap which in the case of the Semi would be perfect while the vehicle is charging.
Lack of daily comfort
The driver continues his overview of the Tesla Semi, then addresses another part of the problem. He regrets that the design of the cabin complicates the possibility of keeping a clean environment.
“If you want to go to the right of the cabin, you have to go through the passenger seat, which crosses the driver’s seat. So you can’t walk past it, like in a standard cabin. And sometimes you have to go out to the right, which happened to me today because there was a lot of snow on my left. »
“Having to go around the cabin means that it will be full of dirt. The beauty of being able to get directly into the driver’s seat is that you can shake off your shoes and brush off mud or snow when you get there. And even if your boots are still dirty, only the small part in front of the seat is dirty. »
“You can take your boots off here and walk barefoot in the rest of the cabin, which is kept clean. But no, not in a Tesla. Unless you change your shoes every time you enter the cabin, which would be stupid. »
Continuing his study of the latest addition to Elon Musk’s brand, Tomasz Orynski tackles the two shelves that surround the steering wheel. The Pole explains that he himself drove a Mercedes truck with camera mirrors. There are two problems: the difficulty of adjusting them due to the distance and the glow they cause at night.
Screens and a windshield that complicate life
But it’s the Tesla Semi’s windshield that’s a big concern for this regular truck. He explains why the tilt of this window is a problem.
“The snow will settle on it when you park in the winter. Remember how painful it is to clean snow off a car window? Try three meters high. If the window is vertical, snow is not a problem. »
There is also “Cabin overheating when driving on a sunny summer day. Even van cabins can get very hot. That’s because of the large, slanted windshield. It can of course be adjusted with the air conditioning, which will increase consumption and reduce your autonomy. »
“The sloping windscreen also offers larger blind spots. Think how many times you narrowly avoided a pedestrian while turning in a modern car. And there are also these tablets in your field of vision. »
“The cabin is narrower at the front. But the mirrors must be able to see behind. This means they have long arms. So you can’t sit on the seat, open the window and clean them when they get dirty. You cannot reach them from the inside nor from the outside because they are too high. »
In conclusion, he regrets that Tesla has thought above all about the aesthetics of the vehicle, whose ergonomics are crucial. According to him, the engineers working on the Semi did not have specifications specific enough to the needs of the drivers who will use it.
