37 taxis stopped after a very serious Tesla accident in Paris, an ongoing investigation – Maj

Update 16/12/2021 : The taxi driver at the origin of the accident was indicted on Wednesday, December 15, on charges of “homicide and involuntary injury by the driver of a motorized land vehicle”.

His lawyer specifies that he is a man in his fifties, a taxi driver for thirty years. His car, bought new three months ago, had so far never posed a problem. “He is very shocked by this accident. He told me that he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle raced and the brake pedal no longer responded. has no handbrake”, explains the lawyer. Tesla, for its part, claims to have had access to vehicle data showing that there was no technical problem. “Tesla says that, except that the car is under seal, so I don’t know how they managed to do this expertise” counterattacks the driver’s lawyer.

The road accident that occurred last Saturday in the capital caused one death and a dozen injuries. The first elements of the investigation mention an off-duty taxi driver who was transporting family members in his Tesla Model 3 vehicle in the 13e district of Paris.

For an undetermined reason, the driver suddenly lost control of his vehicle around 9 p.m. The Tesla was then rammed into passers-by at high speed.

As a result, the G7 company has discontinued its taxis of this vehicle model. However, this only concerns 37 company vehicles.

Tesla, which has access to certain technical data remotely, assured that there had been “no technical failure” of its car. A spokesperson for the group also said that the company remained “at the disposal of the authorities” to transmit the data to them.

Regular complaints, constant defense

The American manufacturer is regularly the subject of complaints. More specifically on the operation of the autopilot. Last January, the American traffic policeman – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – authorized an in-depth investigation into a possible recall of 500,000 Tesla vehicles in the United States. The reason ? A spike in reports of vehicles experiencing sudden and unexpected accelerations.

Again, Tesla management assured that these accusations were “completely false”. For the manufacturer, the automatic pilot cannot be called into question on this point. “The car accelerates if, and only if, the driver tells it to, and it slows down or stops when the driver applies the brake,” Tesla said.

Unlike the vast majority of autonomous vehicles, “the accelerator pedals of the S, X and 3 models have two independent position sensors, and in the event of an error, the system cuts the engine torque by default. Similarly, the simultaneous application of the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal cancels the action on the accelerator pedal and cuts the engine torque, and regardless of the torque, prolonged braking brings the car to a stop”, explains the management of Tesla, who recalls that “each system is independent and records data, which allows us to examine exactly what happened”.

“Suddenly the car accelerated by itself”

However, the incidents recorded are not lacking. “On November 29, 2019, we were driving our five-month-old Tesla Model 3. We were stopping at a red light in heavy traffic, when suddenly the car accelerated on its own. My husband had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting another car,” wrote a Tesla owner who narrowly missed causing a traffic accident.

Another described in detail an event that occurred on December 15, 2019, when he was using the automatic parking system to park the vehicle. He said his hands were off the steering wheel and his foot was off the brakes or the accelerator when the car suddenly “accelerated into reverse of its own accord, forcing me to press the brake to stop it, the latter having nevertheless hit a pole in reverse, thus damaging its bodywork”.
